As a diehard Arsenal fan in the 1970s, I really did not have too many good memories of John Devine. Devine was
clearly the achilles heel in Arsenal's defense in the
1980 FA Cup Final against West Ham. He often left
the defense wide open with his instinct to attack: much to the delight of Trevor Brooking and Alan Devonshire.
Terry Neil could have started with the same team that that won the
FA Cup the previous year, but preferred Devine over Sammy Nelson
for some reason. Devine was later substituted by Nelson. Was part of the Arsenal that declined steeply during the
waning years of Terry Neil's management.
