My comments

From the 1971 FA Cup Final programme:

Another 20-year-old, he has soared from reserve obscurity to become the talk of the Highbury terraces in just two seasons—and, remember, he spent the early months of 1970–71 out of action after cracking an ankle in the opening game at Everton. His midfield flair and class are augmented by cool application in scoring positions. Product of Islington Schools football. Professional since February 1968.

A prolific striker for Arsenal. George is best remembered for his winner against Liverpool in the 1971 FA Cup Final, which won Arsenal its first League and FA Cup "double". George had the ability to create and score goals from difficult angles and could be fancy with his footwork. Saw him won his first and only cap against the Republic of Ireland in 1976, and was later replaced by Gordon Hill of Manchester United in the same game. Surprised that George was not called to the England squad during his heydays with Arsenal.

I only saw him from 10,000 miles away on TV in Nhill, Victoria, Australia. My memory was of him jogging around on the forward line doing enigmatic things, and not taking anything that seriously. Once I remember him taking a shot from around 30 yrds out and Brian Moore saying profoundly "Charlie George, what a lazy action, but what power". This pretty much summed up the man (George AND Moore). I also seem to remember him playing for Derby County too in all white with the ram's head on the front but as I remember he was kind of frustrated all the time although a stand out and key man. I was only young and it was a long time ago. If anyone knows of a good biography it would be a good read.
