I was 12 or 13 years old when I was first taken to Highbury. I was with a friend and his father. The visiting team was Aston Villa and Arsenal won, 1-0. The goal was scored by Rooke who broke into the clear and flicked the ball over the head of the advancing Villa goalkeeper. I remember it vividly and visited Highbury many more times before emigrating to Canada in 1966. I support Arsenal as much today as I did when I was living in England.
Ronnie Rooke lived in Acacia Road Guildford just oposite my father and his family. Athough my father was a couple years older than Ronnie they played local football together prior to Ronnie joining Crystal Palace. My father continued with Guildfrod City. I was first taken to see Arsenal in 1947 when I was just 9 and I have continued to see and follow them ever since. I met Ronnie a couple of times at Highbury and when asked he said the strangest goal he ever scored was against Grimsby Town when Ronnie jumped to head a low goal kick and it hit him on the chin and went back into the goal.
